What Are the Different Types of Hair Loss?

Both men and women can experience hair loss. Pattern hair loss is what most people are familiar with. In men, hair loss is typically seen around the temples and on the crown, which is known as male pattern baldness. I female pattern hair loss, the hair thin at the part (where the hair splits on either side of the head) and spreads side to side as well as front to back.

The main culprit of this type of hair loss is DHT. DHT reduces the size of hair follicles, preventing hair from growing longer and thicker. Although women generally have a much lower DHT levels, it can still cause hair loss in women.

What Are the Main Causes of Hair Loss?

While it’s true that vitamin deficiency can cause hair loss, but it’s far from the only reason why people experience thinning hair. That’s why it’s crucial to identify the cause of your hair loss before trying to treat the issue. One of the leading reasons for hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. This means that the hair loss is caused by genetics and a specific androgen hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

High DHT levels in men causes prostate problems in addition to male pattern baldness. This hair loss occurs at the front of the scalp and at the very top or vertex of the scalp.

In women it can cause female pattern hair loss. For affected women, the hair thins at the front and middle of the hair line in a “Christmas tree” distribution. This means that the bald spot at the area where the hair parts looks like a Christmas tree when viewed from the top.

Other common causes of hair loss include traction alopecia, resulting from tight hair styles such as braids or weaves. It can also be caused by a compulsive tic or habit that involves pulling on the hair.

Autoimmune diseases can cause hair loss. These are conditions in which the body attacks the hair follicles such as alopecia areata and lupus.

The right hair loss treatment will depend on the cause of your hair loss. HairOmega hair supplements have ingredients that help support a healthy inflammation response, block excess DHT, and provide nutrients and vitamins for hair growth.

Which Vitamin Deficiencies Cause Hair Loss?

Biotin isn’t the only vitamin that makes your hair grow faster and thicker. Vitamin E helps promote hair growth by supporting scalp circulation and preventing free radical damage to hair follicles. Vitamin D can help strengthen hair follicles and aid hair growth. Omega-fatty acids, found in flaxseed and fish oil supplements, also improve the flow of oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. People with zinc deficiencies may suffer from thinning hair, and supplementation should correct the problem. Women with thinning hair may benefit from iron supplements, but always check with your doctor before starting iron supplements.

Vitamin C: A deficiency in vitamin C can play a role in dry and brittle hair.1 In combination with other nutrients, vitamin C helps support hair growth by assisting with collagen production and with the absorption of non-heme iron2 (iron from plant sources).

B-Complex Vitamins: B vitamins, particularly biotin, are important nutrients for hair. Biotin helps support hair growth by strengthening the structure of the hair shaft.

Vitamin E: This vitamin helps hair growth by supporting good circulation in the scalp, which helps to transport oxygen and other nutrients to the hair follicles.

Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes healthy hair by keeping the scalp in healthy condition.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D strengthens hair follicles. It may also promote the growth of new hair follicles.Vitamin D deficiency can lead to hair loss.

Iron: Iron supports hair growth by promoting healthy circulation and transporting oxygen and other essential nutrients to hair follicles. A deficiency can lead to hair loss.

Magnesium: Hair loss is one of the signs of magnesium deficiency. Because of magnesium’s role in supporting blood flow, it helps with the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These essential fatty acids support hair growth by enhancing the inflammatory response and improving the flow of oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles.

Zinc: This essential mineral supports hair growth by strengthening hair follicles. Studies show it may also help to promote hair re-growth in some cases of alopecia.4

Selenium: Combined with zinc, selenium assists with healthy hair growth by maintaining balanced hormone levels and boosting the immune system.

How Does Biotin Support Hair Growth?

The most well-known supplement to support hair growth is biotin. This B-complex vitamin, also known as vitamin B7, is not only a hair growth vitamin, but it is also a vitamin for healthy skin and stronger nails.

Scientists aren’t sure what makes biotin great at supporting hair growth. It is known that biotin is a cofactor for many important chemical reactions. Biotin helps the body change food into energy, and could work on hair by supporting the production of amino acids, the building blocks of hair.

As with all water-soluble B vitamins, it’s not stored in the body, so supplementation is necessary. If your hair has been damaged by excessive use of dyes and other harsh chemicals, hot styling products or excess sun exposure, biotin supplementation is particularly important. Signs of biotin deficiency include hair loss and brittle nails.

Does Minoxidil Work For Beard Growth?

One of the best hair growth products available over the counter is minoxidil, an ingredient used in HairOmega Serum. There are 2 percent and 5 percent varieties of minoxidil available. Minoxidil is a vasodilator which causes blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow and the supply of nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, and thus promoting hair growth.

Minoxidil is typically used for people experiencing either male or female pattern baldness but may be helpful for stimulating beard growth. Studies reported that women using minoxidil for hair loss noticed the side effect of increased facial hair and body hair growth.

Some people may experience side effects when using minoxidil such as skin irritation and headache. Using 2% minoxidil instead of 5% minoxidil will reduce side effects. Using a water-based minoxidil product, such as HairOmega Serum, instead of alcohol based minoxidil product will also lower the chances of developing skin irritation.

What are the Causes and Treatments of Hair Loss and Thinning in Women?

Female hair thinning differs from males. Early signs of female hair thinning may include loss of hair at the temples and a widening hair part (area at the front of the scalp where the hair splits in two). Genetic female pattern hair loss often becomes apparent around the onset of menopause, when the ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone. Lower levels of progesterone and estrogen during and after menopause make the presence of the hair loss causing hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) more apparent. Hormone replacement therapy replaces the estrogen and progesterone no longer produced by post-menopausal ovaries and can improve thinning hair and other side effects of menopause, but carries risks of its own. Discuss the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy with your doctor.

Women can combat thinning hair with a combination of hair growth products, including hair growth supplements and hair growth products such as minoxidil. Consider supplements such as biotin, vitamins A, C, and E, and omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamins A, C, and E are powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and repair damage to hair and skin. Since vitamin A supplementation can cause side effects if taken in excess, use doctor formulated HairOmega products which are carefully formulated to support hair growth.

How do Store Bought Shampoos Make your Hair Loss Worse?

The problem with many shampoos today is that they contain harsh detergents that dry out the hair and roots completely, causing irritation. Look for a shampoo that cleanses gently with all-natural ingredients.
